From prince to toad

A few years ago, Prince Harry was one of the most popular British Royals.

As a boy, he lost his mother in a public way, garnering the world’s sympathy. As a youth, he was cheeky and not averse to having a laugh. It landed him in trouble several times, but the indulgent nation also got the impression that the Prince was just a regular lad. This helped the Royal brand, removing the aloofness and coldness that can easily calcify The Establishment.

The public even forgave the Prince his trespasses, such as wearing a Nazi uniform to a party and calling a fellow soldier of Pakistani descent a racist slur. His popularity endured.

Not any longer. With the unceasing supply of private intimacies, family dirty laundry, half-truths, and outright falsehoods coming at the public in the form of incessant interviews, podcasts, and books – we are witnessing the reverse-metamorphosis of a popular prince into a toad, and Harry has no one to blame but himself.

For those of us with a smattering of half-remembered school Latin, it is intensely ironic that Harry was the one who founded the Invictus Games – the sporting event for wounded and disabled servicemen and women. The word ‘Invictus’ means unconquered or undefeated, and was supposedly chosen to signify that though the athletes may be maimed and restricted, they do not wallow in self-pity but go on reaching for the stars.

Harry should take some of his own medicine considering that his primary occupation has become selling self-pity for hundreds of millions of dollars at the expense of his family and the nation that once loved him.

It appears that someone has infested his mind with radical Hollywood progressive ideas, although it is possible they are his own proclivity. Regardless, the Prince has, in a few short years, undone a lifetime’s worth of public affection.

He and his wife have paid back public fondness and warmth with spite and slurs, all the time insisting that they are the victims while their own actions are filled with hypocrisies.

After a national fanfare during their marriage, chaperoned by glowing headlines in the media, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex set off on their war path. Keen to get out of the UK and escape the dreariness and duty of being working Royals, the couple accepted £2.4 million from the British taxpayer to refurbish Frogmore Cottage, months before moving into their $12 million mansion in California.

While lecturing the world about environmentalism, the pair seemingly cannot stop taking private jets, flying in one to attend an award ceremony for sustainability even though private jets emit up to 14 times the amount of pollution of commercial planes per passenger.

Their conduct reminds one of Michel de Montaigne, who wrote, ‘Between ourselves, there are two things that I have always observed to be in singular accord: supercelestial thoughts and subterranean conduct.’

But this type of Woke-think is not uncommon among the elite, who are often insulated from the real world. However, the worst of Harry and Meghan’s conduct is the charges of racism that they have thrown at the Royal Family, the British press, and the British people.

There is the unqualified and unsubstantiated accusation of racism towards their unborn child from unnamed members of the Royal Family, casting a dark cloud over all of their heads. There is the suggestion that the British press used the N-word to describe their children, which is completely unsupported. And there is the allegation that the UK media is fixated on Meghan’s race, forgetting all the resplendent headlines they received early in their relationship and marriage, as well as the rapture of the British public. And in the Netflix series, the pair linked Brexit with racism. All this from the only modern Royal member to have used racial slurs and worn a Nazi uniform in public.

The UK is not racist in 2023. 190 years after the Slavery Abolition Act was passed, almost uniquely, it has had people of minority backgrounds in all four Great Offices of State – the Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Foreign Secretary, and Home Secretary. Currently, the Prime Minister is of Punjabi descent, the Foreign Secretary is of African descent, and the Home Secretary is of Indian descent. Even Boris Johnson, pale and blonde though he is, is part Turkish.

A 2019 study that surveyed 100 countries has also found that the British, Americans, Australians, New Zealanders, and Canadians are among the least racist societies. The Royal pair are wrong whichever way you look at it, and are desperately making a mountain out of a molehill.

The constant bombardments Prince Harry has made against his family did not cease around the death of his grandfather or that of the late Queen. And, per royal protocol, Harry knows that it is highly unlikely that either King Charles III or his brother will respond to the charges.

But the average viewer has every right to raise a quizzical eyebrow to the pair’s claims, as they have an uncomfortable history with facts. Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview alone contained multiple untruths. Claims in Harry’s latest book, Spare, will undoubtedly come under sceptical scrutiny. We can only wonder at how many more untruths will be unearthed.

So, the sunny Prince has sunken to the abyss. He who once decried the media is now both a prostitute of and a pimp for the very industry he apparently loathed.

The world is forced to turn against him, filled with pity and repulsion. As George Orwell wrote, ‘Do remember that dishonesty and cowardice always have to be paid for.’
