THE SPIRIT HORSE – Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBarkPoet

His spirit now is like the wind that whispers through the valleys,

the mountain soils no longer feel the presence of his tread,

the hills no longer echo, with the whinnies and neighing

of this once proud brumby, gone now from the lands where he was bred.

He led his band of mares for years, elusive, caring, cunning.

Keeping them safe on land he knew – each secret cranny and nook.

But alas the smartest stallion, cannot defy technology

that seeks them out by body heat, and heartless – their lives took.

He’s just a brumby stallion – ‘nothing special’ some would say –

not knowing who he was, a stallion running wild and free

on Kosciusko’s Mountain slopes, in tune with nature’s rhythms –

living life in perfect harmony as nature did decree.

And sad we are to see him gone – he’s one who would not be tamed

For capture would break his spirit and his heart would break for sure.

His spirit now forever roams the mountains of his homeland,

and the strong winds share his voice for all to hear for evermore.

I am interested in writing short stories for my pleasure and my family's but although I have published four family books I will not go down that path again but still want what I write out there so I will see how this goes
