A tribute, and in memory of the Australian Light Horse Brigade and the horses they rode. 107 years ago today they did the unthinkable and achieved what was thought to be the impossible.

As the sunset on the pyramids,

In Egypt to the East.

On the snow grass in Australia,

Fed this hardy mountain beast.

Born into the mountains,

Of Australia’s High Country.

Akin to the Aussie,

They were young, wild and free.

Their services were called upon,

to keep our country free.

As horses were in short supply,

Back in 1915.

A muster was required,

In the ranges where it snows.

To carry all the ANZAC’s,

Into battle with our foe.

Bays, greys and chestnuts,

All mustered and broken in.

Ready to be shipped to Cairo,

Never to see home again.

In the battle of Romani,

You showed your courage and strength,

Then crossed the Sinai Desert,

Where your thirst you could not quench.

Just out of Beersheba,

You waited for the call,

A charge at the garrison,

Full gallop, bayonets drawn.

Three miles of open desert,

You galloped hard and fast,

Into trenched machine gun fire,

Trying to avoid the shell fire blasts.

Your courage changed the history,

Of the Middle East.

Breaking the deadlock between Gaza,

Through to the Dead Sea.

You then marched into Damascus,

Proud of your victory,

The surrender of the city,

Now written in the pages of history

So here’s to you old mountain brumby,

Tonight we’ll raise a glass,

Thank you for all the yesterday’s,

Your memories will forever last.

You’ve stood by our side,

Without care of your own fate,

You will never be forgotten.
