Traveler On the Backroads

· she has stood the test of time

weathered wars and seasons

seen her share of brutal winters

watched grass fires sweep across the prairie

devouring everything in their wake

heard the laughter of children fast at play

while pa worked the fields

and ma hung laundry out to dry

watched lovers share a picnic

beneath the shade tree

a cool breeze

causing leaves to fall like a soft spring rain

mostly now she stands alone

watching the seasons change

but she had her day and

has earned her place in time
